Little secret about fiber

Fibre is not food for us, but food for the trillions of healthy bacteria that live in our body. Feed them fiber, and they will protect us from invading bad bacteria, help us absorb more calcium and vitamins, and decrease our risk to chronic disease.

NOT YOUR ORDINARY FIBER
Boosting our Natural Defenses

Our intestinal flora plays a key role in the body's defense system.

Our digestive system contains billions (often trillions) of bacteria - some good, some bad. Therefore, it is key to make sure that we stimulate the good bacteria as much as possible.

Scientific research shows that special prebiotic fibers known as
smartfiberstixx (scientifically known as inulin) selectively stimulates the growth of good bacteria. The good bacteria are known as bifidobacteria and lactobacillus. You will recognize this name if you eat yoghurt, as they are added as probiotics in yoghurts such as StonyField and Dannon. By feeding the bifidobacterium fiber - yes, fiber is food for bacteria - you can get the upper hand and ensure that the bad bacteria cannot develop properly.

The healthy effect of the bifidobacteria in our body is well-known and its role in protecting the delicate balance in our intestinal flora has been demonstrated in a number of human studies.

This positive effect of natural prebiotic fibers from inulin is also called the 'bifidogenic' or the 'prebiotic' effect.

The figure below shows exactly what happens when you include
smartfiberstixx as part of your healthy diet. Keep your eye on the green slice showing the stimulation of bifidobacterium. Before on the left and after on the right.

Multiple scientific studies have shown the following protective characteristics are attributed to the stimulation and growth bifidobacteria in humans:

- production of vitamins (especially vitamin B)
- activation of the immune system
- production of fatty acids and of bacteriocines as protection against pathogenic substances and bacteria
- reduction of blood triglycerides
- protection against intestinal cancer
